Cam'ron 'May' Return

A few years ago, Cam'ron seemed poised to become one of hip-hop's most successful artists. By 2006, he had released five studio albums, including "Come Home With Me," which sold 1.2 million copies, and "Purple Haze," which sold 560,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

But after a falling-out within his Dipset crew -- whose other members are rappers Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, Freekey Zekey -- a public dispute with 50 Cent and his mother's multiple strokes, Cam'ron vanished from public view. Aside from a 2007 YouTube video, which showed him standing next to a kiddie pool with palm trees, warning that it would be a hot summer, he stayed away from the music scene.

It still isn't clear whether Cam'ron was laying low in the Midwest, as some speculated, or whether he spent the entire time with his mother at a rehab center in Florida. But regardless of where he spent the last few years, Cam'ron says his self-imposed exile is over. He's preparing the May 12 arrival of his sixth studio album, "Crime Pays," which will be released on Asylum Records.

Cam'ron is also working on a compilation album with his new crew, U.N. (which includes Lady Byrd and Vado), that is set for a late-August release. There is also talk of an as-yet-untitled album being released in December and a potential film soundtrack that will be released that month as well. "I don't want to clog out everything, so I might wait till I drop my own album and see," Cam'ron says.

He recently turned down offers to record a Dipset reunion album, "Diplomacy Immunity 3," after Jones made a peace offering on Hot 97's Funk Master Flex radio show. But Cam'ron hints that it might happen in 2010.

"My year is booked up. I don't have time for that," he says. "I wish them the best of luck. Maybe next year we can sit down and talk, but no time soon. Right now, I'm focused on 'Crime Pays' and the rest of my 2009 plan." -Mariel Concepcion

Before her debut IN A PERFECT WORLD. appeared in 2009, Keri Hilson had already established an impressive track record in the industry, writing high-charting hits for Mary J. Blige, Timbaland, and Britney Spears, among others, and contributing ... Full Descriptionher unique, elastic voice on various high-profile cameos. IN A PERFECT WORLD. lives up to its promise by giving her singing and writing plenty of room to stretch out. Club bangers like "Turnin' Me On" and "Get Your Money Up" are Hilson's specialty, but she's no slouch on slow-burn ballads and seductive urban contemporary numbers either. Top-flight production from Timbaland, Danja, and Polow da Don provides the lush sonic backdrop against which Hilson's talents unfurl.

The dynamic songwriter was born in Decatur, GA, only a few miles outside of Atlanta. Addicted to TV talent shows like Star Search and Showtime at the Apollo, she was already plotting out her career in music at age 12. Even though her mother hired a piano teacher to encourage those talents, she mainly wanted to sing; therefore, Hilson converted those sessions into vocal lessons, accompanying the teacher on piano. In her mid- to late teens, her career jumped off as a songwriter and background vocalist, working under producer Anthony Dent (Destiny's Child, Diddy). Borne out of that relationship were two failed girl groups (named Pretty Toni and D'Sign) and, more importantly, a host of connections within the industry for whom she wrote or did backup vocals, including Usher, Ludacris, Kelly Rowland, Ciara, and up-and-coming Southern rap producer Polow da Don. After Hilson graduated from high school, she managed to continue juggling all these tasks when she enrolled into Emory University in Atlanta. She eventually moved on from Dent and began working more with Polow da Don. Attending school while actively advancing her music career put a great demand on her, especially from being a member of the extremely versatile Clutch team. But as luck would have it, Polow introduced her to superproducer Timbaland, who wasted no time in signing the multi-talented songbird to his growing Mosley Music imprint in 2006. Over the next couple years, Hilson's songwriting was practically ubiquitous, responsible for numerous hit singles, including Mary J. Blige's "Take Me as I Am," Omarion's "Ice Box," the Pussycat Dolls' "Wait a Minute," and Britney Spears' "Gimme More." She was also featured prominently on Timbaland Presents Shock Value, including the number three Billboard Hot 100 hit "The Way I Are." With Timbaland and Polow in her corner, Hilson relied on the vast pool of recording artists and producers who needed (and wanted) to return the favor for her Mosley Music/Interscope debut. After a couple pre-release singles and numerous delays, In a Perfect World was issued in March 2009, shortly after one of its tracks, "Turnin' Me On," had reached the Top 20 of the Hot 100. ~ Cyril Cordor, All Music Guide

New Independent Release is 'Gone Ham'

Grand Champ, Big T, & Klear J collective make up the group Certified Grand. Coming from Atlanta (hip-hop music central of right now) they are the group that you really need to follow in the future. This is just the first mixtape that the group has completed and I personally can't wait to see what comes next. I'm surprised by the complete skill that these guys show on every single one of the 19 Tracks that are on the mixtape. They even seem to show the women a what a great time they could have just being in the club with them on "Tonite," which feature an Auto-Tune filled hook sung by Main Event. There is no surprise of their knowledge of the might dollar when you hear tracks such as "Wrist Like Damn" and "I Ball All Week".

I guarantee that you will love this mixtape as I think this is one of the best of 2009...so far. Keep checking up on their progress @ myspace.com/certifiedmuz1k. I know that you will 'go HAM' over this.- Josh Lemons

Pastor Troy is BACK

Anyone out the that doesn't know anything about Pastor Troy, you must not be a fan of Underground Hip-Hop @all. Pastor Troy is a legend in his own right. This is the follow up to his T.R.O.Y. album. Working with a unique contract situation, Pastor Troy has been able to keep his hungry fans well fed with a barrage of solo and collaboration albums throughout the 2000s (an astonishing 12 LPs in under a decade). On FEEL ME OR KILL ME, the hardest ... Full Descriptionpreacher on the mic lets his frenzied ATL flow loose over 12 hardcore tracks, calling out his foes on "I Want War" and "Who U Gonna Call," looking at the pitfalls of the legal system on the cautionary "Facin' Fifteen," and revealing his Mafia side on "Talkin' Shit." FEEL ME OR KILL ME features production from Trackman, KP, DJ Squeeky, and PT himself.

Recognized for the lyrical self-consciousness, thoughtfulness, and sincerity he injects into his otherwise standard approach to Dirty South rap, Pastor Troy stood out among the masses of up-and-coming Southern MC trying to break out nationally in the early 2000s. Born Micah LeVar Troy on November 18, 1977, in the College Park suburb of Atlanta, GA, he grew up under the influence of his father, Alfred Troy, a principled man of Haitian descent who is a former drill instructor turned pastor. Street culture, and specifically rap music, also influenced Pastor Troy when he was a teenager at Creekside High School and, later, a student at Payne College. Pastor Troy made his recording debut in 1999 with We Ready - I Declare War, an underground album released by Madd Society Records. "No Mo Play in G.A.," a Master P dis, drew attention to the album and earned Pastor Troy some initial notoriety. A pair of subsequent underground albums -- Book I and Pastor Troy for President, both released in 2000 -- set the stage for Pastor Troy's major-label debut, Face Off (2001). Released by Universal Records, the album was led by the non-charting single "This tha City" and included previously released material (e.g., "No Mo Play in G.A."). Also in 2001, the Pastor Troy-affiliated group DSGB (i.e., Down South Georgia Boyz) made its debut on The Last Supper, released by Khaotic Generation Records. Pastor Troy's second album for Universal, Universal Soldier (2002), was his most successful. The album, his first comprised of entirely all-new material, boasted a couple Timbaland productions, including "Are We Cuttin'," which was released as a single. Lil Jon also produced a few tracks ("Who, What, When, Where," "For My Hustlaz," "If They Kill Me"). Universal Soldier charted at number 13 on The Billboard 200, while "Are We Cuttin'" broke into the The Billboard Hot 100 (number 96) -- both career highs for Pastor Troy. By Any Means Necessary (2004), the follow-up album, and "Ridin' Big," its lead single, couldn't match the commercial success of the previous go-round, and consequently Pastor Troy and Universal dissolved their partnership. Once again an independent rapper, Pastor Troy began releasing a variety of albums at a fast rate: Face Off, Pt. 2 and Hood Hustlin': The Mix Tape, Vol. 1 were released in 2005; Stay Tru, By Choice or by Force, Down South Hood Hustlin, and Atlanta 2 Memphis in 2006; and Tool Muziq in 2007. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

'Asleep' with Asher Roth

Heavily hyped upon his arrival to the mainstream rap scene in 2008, Asher Roth is a college-educated rapper who made headlines as the first white rapper to be featured on a DJ Drama mixtape. Born in Morrisville, PA, he began rapping as a teenager and developed a fan base while attending college, thanks largely to social-networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook. His early releases include the 2006 mixtape album Believe the Hype. Rap industry businessmen Scooter Braun and Steve Rifkind took notice of his talent and signed him to a major-label recording contract with SRC/Universal, and in 2008, Roth burst onto the mainstream rap scene with The Greenhouse Effect Mixtape. Hosted by Don Cannon and DJ Drama of the renowned Gangsta Grillz mixtape series, The Greenhouse Effect Mixtape was made available online as a free download on "The Daily Kush," a multimedia blog set up to promote Roth. In late 2008 he had an Internet hit when a bootleg of his single "I Love College" appeared. The original cut featured a sample of Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" but when the band refused to license it, the track was re-recorded. This new version landed on Asher's debut album Asleep in the Bread Aisle, released in the spring of 2009. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

The second-coming of sorts to literate white MCs like Paul Barman, Asher Roth's full-length debut came heavily hyped, thanks to his appearance on a DJ Drama mixtape and a stamp of approval from Jay-Z. Given Roth's knack for wordplay and arcane ... Full Descriptionreferences, ASLEEP IN THE BREAD AISLE could have been more subversive. It's often difficult to discern when the suburban Pennsylvanian is sending up the trappings of the hip-hop lifestyle. Either way, he's learned his lessons well from heroes like Eminem; the class-clown chatterbox flow matches up well with the alterna-pop production and left-of-center guest spots by Cee-Lo and Jazze Pha. ASLEEP is at times contrived, but displays the talents of a rapper with the potential for something unique. Purchase today @ CDUniverse.com

Let's All 'Relapse' with Eminem

Lyrical acrobat Slim Shady returns after a five-year absence with his fifth major label release, continuing to strike the perfect balance between brooding insight and absolute silliness on 2009's RELAPSE. Opening single "Crack a Bottle" reunites ... Full DescriptionDetroit's maddest rapper with his superstar mentor (Dr. Dre) and protege (50 Cent) on a fittingly funky tour de force.

I don't know about y'all but I'ma big supporter and fan of Eminem. Let's face it the man is a genius. Anyone that can come and flip the rap game upside down, puts another artist out (50 Cent) that does the same and still raise a babygirl (his daughter Haley) all at the same time deserves such respect. Check out the new album "Relapse" releasing on May 19, 2009 and preorder it from CD Universe today.

Jadakiss delivers his 'Last Kiss'

On his third official studio LP (and first for Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam), Jadakiss branches out from the traditional East Coast boom-bap he's been known for since putting it down with the Lox. With contributions from a lengthy list of guest artists ... Full Descriptionand producers, THE LAST KISS sees Jada flirting with Dirty South crunk, ATL trap rap, and synthesizer-driven radio-friendly hip-hop. On the lyrical side, the D-Block representative remains as combative as ever, spitting aggressive one-liners and clever boast-fueled rhymes. From the outset, Jada proclaims that he's come to bring listeners "slick talk, pain, and torture." The Yonkers lyricist lays down a list of head-scratching hypotheticals alongside Nas on the impressive "What If" and composes a heartfelt message to his deceased friend on "Letter to B.I.G." The eclectic production comes courtesy of Swizz Beatz, Ne-Yo, the Neptunes, Mr. Porter, Eric Hudson, Buckwild, and Sean C & LV, among others.
This album is really worth buying. Exspecially if you are with the New York type of swagger that is displayed on song like "Can't Stop Me." Purchase TODAY @ CD Universe.com. Listen and by the album online.

Rick Ross is 'Deeper Than Rap'

One of the brightest South rap school representatives Rick Ross has attracted the attention of both the audience and critics very quickly earning the reputation of a self-confident artist who knows well what he’s worth.

No doubt Rick Ross knows perfectly well what the real rap means and how the good quality finished product should sound like. The production team J.U.S.T.I.C.E. has contributed greatly to Deeper Than Rap, and each of the artists who has participated in the recording has remained content with it. Besides Ross’ third record is the first one to be released on his own label Maybach Music Group and hence symbolizes the official beginning of his activity as a producer. The album’s 14 tracks please throughout it with powerful beats, various moods which are actually mainly rather darkish and Rick Ross’ even more contagious voice timber. And even if someone is already annoyed with the drugs theme this time the artist has dissolved it well with the new deep thoughts about how one should live and how not, what things are important and what are secondary. It is not known whether he is going to take a different approach to work for his next creation but one thing is clear: Deeper Than Rap promises a lot of interesting things in future for Rick Ross’ professional growth is but obvious on it.

Deeper Than Rap is worth taking a listen to and you can download the album now @ CD Universe.
